Whether you’re hiring a sax player for a wedding, corporate function, private party, or any other gathering, understanding the pricing range and what affects it can help you make an informed decision, allowing you to find the write saxophonist for you.
Firstly, the experience and skill level of the sax player will play a significant role in determining the cost. A professional saxophonist with years of experience may charge anywhere from £350 to £1,000 or more for a performance. Typically, the more renowned the musician, the higher the fee. For instance, a sax player who has performed with well-known artists or has a solid record of performances at major venues will often have a higher rate reflecting their expertise and reputation. With working musicians it is rare that a performer will charge more than their worth (in my experience) so if they’re charging a relatively high fee then they are probably worth it.
Location, location, location! More city-orientated areas tend to have higher costs of living, which can translate to higher fees for musicians. If you’re in a metropolitan area like London, you might find rates on the higher end of the spectrum compared to smaller towns or rural areas, where fees can range from £200 to £500. It is important to note that a sax player’s quality is not affected by whether they live in a rural or urban area but their relative cost of living is! Additionally, travel expenses may factor in if the sax player is coming from outside your local area. I normally charge travel per mile when I’m driving for an hour or more each way, other players operate differently.
Event duration is also essential. Most musicians have a base rate for a set number of hours (for example, mine is £375 for 2x45 minutes, about average for the UK), with additional fees for extended performance times. A typical four-hour event may incur a cost of anywhere between £500 to £1,200, while a shorter, hour and a half or two hour set will be anywhere from £300 to £500.
Another consideration is the type of performance required. Background music for a wedding party or reception often costs less than a featured performance or wedding entry. For instance, hiring a sax player for a dinner setting may run between £300 to £500, while a more prominent feature performance might cost upwards of £1000, depending on the reputation of the musician. Equally, you can talk to them to discover what they’ll do and costs. It is also worth noting that some sax players may provide their own sound equipment, while others may charge extra for this service - these aren’t necessarily hidden costs but it is definitely worth being aware of whether or not your chosen performer has all the gear required.
