Call me biased but having a saxophonist at your wedding is a must! They bring a touch of musical class and glamour; they will definitely be one of the most memorable elements of your big day!

You can use your saxophone player to perform at various parts of the day. I normally think of the saxophone being most useful during the ceremony (either performing during the ceremony itself or background music before or playing people down the aisle), as part of the entertainment for drinks outside in the afternoon. Your saxophone player could be well-used during you wedding entrance into the wedding breakfast or if you’re having a cocktail hour post-dinner then a little light sax to get everyone in the mood might be good. Finally, your saxophonist could get to work on your dance floor either solo or with a band and help to get the party started!

I normally suggest to leave live music during dinner as, in most parties, it is wasted on people being distracted by food. Also, if the free bar is doing its job then conversation should be buzzing by that stage of the event!

You may choose to have a saxophonist accompany you during your first dance. I’ve done plenty of these and they vary from some saccharine ballads (think Ed Sheeran, John Legend), to Country powerhouses, to downright silly (Jurassic Park and Cotton-Eyed Joe) but I always suggest to find something that is specific to you and your partner… and preferably not too long! I once had to do a 7.5 minute slow dance with a couple and it’s fair to say that you do run the risk of losing the crowd…

Saxophonists are generally very versatile players and can give a decent play to most types of music (within reason) so whilst there are plenty of cool tunes that already feature saxophone in them some of the below aren’t traditionally saxophone tunes but do work well as a sax feature.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder

Hugely groovy tune with lyrics that perfectly fit the wedding ethos. It works across multiple generations and remains an absolute stalwart of 90% of the wedding sets in the country (this is a completely made up statistic but it’s a massive soul banger).

Lover - Taylor Swift

Sweet lyrics and Taylor’s signature excellent song writing make this a great first dance ballad. Works well with sax and is a beautiful way to kickstart your marriage!

I Could Get Used To This - Becky Hill, Weiss

A banger of an Ibiza track that also doubles up really well as a first dance. Definitely worth having a look at if Ibiza vibes are what you’re aiming for!

You & Me Song - The Wannabes

The number of times I’ve seen this on a band setlist and said to the trumpeter ‘mate, what is this tune?’ And they’ve just shrugged… it’s one of those tunes that you instantly recognise. Fantastic energy with a massive singalong chorus that everyone will know despite not knowing the name of the song!

I Won’t Give Up - Jason Mraz

One of several brilliant songs by Jason Mraz, this one is perfectly suited both tonally and melodically to a first dance. It starts low, gets epic with an almost country twist… definitely worth a look!
