Saxophone Wedding Entrance - What Song Should You Choose?

Choosing music for your big day is a massively important part of the mammoth logistics that you’ll face. It won’t always seem that important but it will affect the vibe and feel of your wedding a lot whilst allowing you to put your own personality and stamp on the day.
Whether you hire a saxophonist, band, DJ or a more novel type of musical act or entertainment (belly dancers, fire breathers, firework show etc.) then there will be certain types of music and set pieces that they will do as standard. They’ll play what they’re good at and very much play to their strengths, performing songs that they know will work with their audience. It’s always good to ask for requests but they can really damage the vibe or flow of a set. I had a DJ gig a few years ago where I was told to play 6 N Dubz tracks back to back and it cleared the dance floor… the party never quite recovered! Whilst musicians are always keen to keep the client happy it is worth letting them use their expertise!
That said, there are various hit points of the day where you very much should choose songs that mean everything to you. It’s perfectly possible that you’ve had a song in your head that you’ve dreamed of walking down the aisle to for years or maybe you don’t care but want something that will please everyone. Maybe you want to run around the hall where your wedding breakfast will take place whilst everyone chants you and your partner’s names; whatever your dream entrance is, a saxophone is the perfect choice of instrument to play you in. It’s brash and loud with a huge amount of personality to get everyone going and it will look really cool in your wedding photos!
Firstly, when choosing your saxophone wedding entrance song make sure that it is something you like. Secondly, make it fit the vibe and situation that you’re going for - the best running around the room with high energy sax tune is Gala’s ‘Freed From Desire’ and my favourite slow and emotional tunes range from ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow,’ to ‘L.O.V.E’ to The Jurassic Park Theme song.
Other strong contenders are ‘Queen of the Night’ by Whitney Houston - high energy and unbelievably sassy. Not an entry song for the faint-hearted or for easily excited uncles. ‘Here Comes The Sun’ by the Beatles, ‘You Are The Best Thing’ by Ray LaMontagne and Nina Simone’s epic ‘Feeling Good.’
As a rule of thumb with weddings and parties generally, always have music. It doesn’t have to be a live saxophonist prancing about breathing fire but you do need something to help ease your guests into conversation and get over that initial hurdle of awkwardness that is inevitable when you bring together so many different people from different parts of your life. That first hour or two before the alcohol does it’s work can be painful without some sort of music to cushion the potential silence.
I offer a saxophone wedding entrance performance as a £100 add-on to my standard performance set of 2x45 minute sets or 3x30 minute sets (£375) so for £475 (plus travel). Other sax players will be a little cheaper or more expensive depending on location, experience or how busy they are but this is a good ballpark.
I generally service the south of England but mainly service the South East, namely London (I’m based in the Dulwich/Forest Hill/Peckham area), Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire but I’m willing to travel further afield depending on the date and distance. I charge travel at 0.25p per mile if I have to be travelling for over an hour each way.
If you end up hiring a saxophonist to play your wedding entry, drinks reception and play in the evening with a DJ then they will often do a bit of a deal to help you out so it is worth asking if you think you might want to lay on the sax heavily on your evening.
Any saxophonist you book will come with their own PA (speaker system) and their own microphone so they will have the option of being self-contained for your reception, they’ll just need power.
