What are the most Famous Sax Songs? Pt.1 (Famous Classics)

London Wedding Saxophone

If you hire a saxophonist for your wedding then you’re going to want a good mix of crowd pleasing pop tunes, dancehall bangers and classic saxophone anthems. If it’s a dancing party then you’ll be wanting upbeat tunes that everyone can sing along to but if it is for the afternoon reception or maybe over dinner then you’ll have a bit more freedom as to what will make sense for your audience.

So with that in mind, what are the most famous saxophone songs that you might want to have at your wedding reception drinks? There are so many to choose from and your saxophone player will likely be more than happy to suggest ideas for your wedding day. Below are some of the more famous sax-featuring tunes.

Careless Whisper by George Michael and Wham! is one of the most recognisable sax riffs in the world. George originally wrote is in 1981 whilst he was on a bus, en route to a DJ gig in London. Performed by saxophonist Steve Gregory, it reached number 1 in 25 countries, however the original sax solo on the demo was played by a friend of Michael’s from down the local pub.

You might have thought that Careless Whisper is a song about love but actually it is based on George’s experience of two-timing two different ladies. The song is about the consequences if one found out about the other so it might not necessarily align with the tone you are hoping for for your wedding.

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty was released in 1978 and is known for its iconic sax riff, performed by saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft. It has been described as the most recognisable sax riff in pop music history and is held to be responsible for a resurgence in saxophone sales and use in mainstream music throughout the 80s.

Ravenscroft, the second choice sax player for the session after Peter Zorn, was instructed to fill several gaps in Baker Street following aa guitar part from Rafferty’s demo. Ravenscroft was apparently only paid £27 for the session (be warned, your wedding saxophonist will be asking for a larger fee than that!) And he apparently now hates listening to the song as his playing was out of tune!
